Le CO2, pour sa part, est tr\u00e8s difficilement stockable, car il pr\u00e9sente des risques de fuites qui lib\u00e8reraient le gaz dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dans le cadre d\u2019un projet pilote appel\u00e9 Carbfix, et d\u00e9but\u00e9 en 2012, l\u2019usine a donc commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 m\u00e9langer les gaz avec de l\u2019eau et \u00e0 r\u00e9injecter la solution dans le basalte volcanique situ\u00e9 en profondeur. Des \u00e9tudes ant\u00e9rieures avaient m\u00eame estim\u00e9 que, dans la plupart des roches, il faudrait des centaines, voire des milliers d\u2019ann\u00e9es. En revanche, dans le basalte situ\u00e9 sous Hellisheidi, 95 pour cent du carbone inject\u00e9 fut solidifi\u00e9 en moins de deux ans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cCela signifie que nous pouvons pomper de grandes quantit\u00e9s de CO2 et le stocker avec un moyen tr\u00e8s s\u00fbr et sur une tr\u00e8s courte p\u00e9riode de temps\u201d, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Martin Stute, hydrologue \u00e0 l\u2019Observatoire de la Terre Lamont-Doherty, de l\u2019universit\u00e9 de Columbia. \u00ab \u00c0 l\u2019avenir, nous pourrions penser \u00e0 utiliser ce dispositif pour les centrales \u00e9lectriques dans des endroits o\u00f9 il y a beaucoup de basalte et il y a beaucoup d\u2019endroits de ce type \u00bb, a-t-il ajout\u00e9. Par exemple, le rapport du Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change de 2014 sugg\u00e8re que, sans cette technologie, il pourrait ne pas \u00eatre possible de limiter le r\u00e9chauffement climatique de mani\u00e8re suffisante.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mais jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, les diff\u00e9rents projets entrepris ont fait peu de progr\u00e8s et les quelques essais r\u00e9alis\u00e9s ont impliqu\u00e9 d\u2019injecter du dioxyde de carbone pur dans du gr\u00e8s ou dans des aquif\u00e8res salins profonds. En revanche, contrairement \u00e0 ces roches s\u00e9dimentaires d\u00e9j\u00e0 test\u00e9es, le basalte contient beaucoup de calcium, de fer et de magn\u00e9sium, qui sont n\u00e9cessaires pour solidifier le carbone, comme l\u2019ont montr\u00e9 plusieurs exp\u00e9riences en laboratoire.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En 2007 l\u2019op\u00e9rateur de la centrale de Hellisheidi, Reykjavik Energy, s\u2019est joint \u00e0 un consortium comprenant les universit\u00e9s de Copenhague et de l\u2019Islande pour se d\u00e9barrasser de ces \u00e9missions de CO2, ainsi que du sulfure d\u2019hydrog\u00e8ne, qui constitue un r\u00e9el probl\u00e8me dans la r\u00e9gion. Mais la plus grande promesse du proc\u00e9d\u00e9 pourrait concerner les usines aliment\u00e9es en combustibles fossiles et autres industries lourdes dont les \u00e9missions de CO2 sont gigantesques.
