Pendant de grandes p\u00e9riodes, on constate de grandes calottes glaciaires qui sont connues comme des p\u00e9riodes glaciaires (ou des \u00e2ges glaciaires) puis les calottes glaciaires se r\u00e9duisent et ce sont des p\u00e9riodes interglaciaires. La p\u00e9riode glaciaire la plus r\u00e9cente a eu lieu entre 120.000 et 11.500 ans. Depuis lors, la Terre est entr\u00e9e dans une p\u00e9riode interglaciaire appel\u00e9e l&rsquo;Holoc\u00e8ne. Les p\u00e9riodes glaciaires sont plus froides, poussi\u00e9reuses et g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement plus s\u00e8ches que les p\u00e9riodes interglaciaires. Ces cycles glaciaires-interglaciaires sont visibles dans de nombreux carottages marins et terrestres \u00e0 partir de donn\u00e9es pal\u00e9oclimatiques dans le monde entier.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Quelle est la cause des cycles glaciaires-interglaciaires\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">Les variations de l&rsquo;orbite de la Terre \u00e0 travers le temps ont chang\u00e9 la quantit\u00e9 de rayonnement solaire re\u00e7ue par la Terre en toute saison. Les p\u00e9riodes interglaciaires repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es comme les p\u00e9riodes des temp\u00e9ratures les plus \u00e9lev\u00e9es (surlign\u00e9es en jaune dans le graphique suivant) dans un carottage de D\u00f4me Fuji de la glace en Antarctique, ont tendance \u00e0 se produire pendant les p\u00e9riodes d&rsquo;un rayonnement solaire plus intense dans l&rsquo;h\u00e9misph\u00e8re Nord. Ces cycles glaciaires-interglaciaires ont fluctu\u00e9 tout au long de la p\u00e9riode du Quaternaire (sur 1,8 millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es). Depuis le milieu du Quaternaire, les cycles glaciaires-interglaciaires ont eu une fr\u00e9quence d&rsquo;environ 100.000 ans. En revanche, les cycles glaciaires-interglaciaires varient de ~ 100.000 ans et comportent des cycles de refroidissement par \u00e9tapes suivies de r\u00e9chauffements rapides, comme on le voit dans cette s\u00e9rie chronologique d\u00e9duit d&rsquo;isotopes de l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne dans le carottage de D\u00f4me Fuji dans la glace de l&rsquo;Antarctique.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Un autre fait int\u00e9ressant montr\u00e9 dans le graphique ci dessus est que les variations des temp\u00e9ratures dans l&rsquo;Antarctique sont en phase avec les changements du rayonnement solaire dans les hautes latitudes nord. Les modifications du rayonnement solaire dans les hautes latitudes sud, pr\u00e8s de l&rsquo;Antarctique sont en fait hors de phase avec les changements des temp\u00e9ratures, telles que la p\u00e9riode la plus froide au cours de la p\u00e9riode glaciaire la plus r\u00e9cente a eu lieu \u00e0 peu pr\u00e8s au moment o\u00f9 la r\u00e9gion connaissait un pic de soleil local. Le r\u00e9chauffement \u00e0 la fin des p\u00e9riodes glaciaires a tendance \u00e0 se produire plus brusquement que l&rsquo;augmentation de l&rsquo;insolation. Il y a plusieurs r\u00e9actions positives qui sont responsables de cela. La premi\u00e8re est la r\u00e9troaction glace-alb\u00e9do. Une deuxi\u00e8me mesure <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">atmosph\u00e9rique <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">consiste en CO2. La mesure directe des \u00e9missions de CO2 pi\u00e9g\u00e9s dans les bulles des carottes de glace montrent que la quantit\u00e9 de CO2 atmosph\u00e9rique a diminu\u00e9 au cours des p\u00e9riodes glaciaires, en partie parce que le CO2 a \u00e9t\u00e9 stock\u00e9 en plus grande quantit\u00e9 dans l&rsquo;oc\u00e9an profond en raison de changements dans l&rsquo;activit\u00e9 oc\u00e9anique soit de m\u00e9lange ou ou soit biologique. La baisse des niveaux de CO2 affaibli l&rsquo;effet de serre atmosph\u00e9rique et contribue \u00e0 maintenir des basses temp\u00e9ratures.
