Le 19 octobre prochain, une partie du mat\u00e9riel de la mission russo-europ\u00e9enne ExoMars 2016, embarqu\u00e9 \u00e0 bord de la fus\u00e9e Proton qui a d\u00e9coll\u00e9 ce lundi, \u00e0 10h31 (heure de Paris), depuis le cosmodrome de Ba\u00efkonour, devrait atterrir \u00e0 la surface de la plan\u00e8te rouge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">L&rsquo;occasion pour l&rsquo;Agence spatiale europ\u00e9enne (ESA) et l&rsquo;agence spatiale russe Roskosmos de d\u00e9montrer leur capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 rivaliser avec la Nasa, seule agence \u00e0 ma\u00eetriser l&rsquo;art martien jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 maintenant. Un challenge en plusieurs \u00e9tapes. D&rsquo;abord, l&rsquo;utilisation d&rsquo;un atterrisseur-test, nomm\u00e9 Schiaparelli, et l&rsquo;analyse des gaz de l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re martienne \u00e0 l&rsquo;aide d&rsquo;une sonde TGO (Trace Gaz Orbiter). Ensuite, le d\u00e9p\u00f4t d&rsquo;un robot \u00e0 la surface de Mars pour y trouver des traces de vie pass\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dans la fus\u00e9e russe lanc\u00e9e ce matin, il y a donc deux bestioles : le satellite TGO, pour Trace Gas Orbiter, et l\u2019atterrisseur Schiaparelli. Le premier est charg\u00e9 de mesurer pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment la composition de l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re martienne, notamment pour y d\u00e9tecter des traces de m\u00e9thane et d\u2019autres gaz rares. Car qui dit m\u00e9thane\u2026 dit peut-\u00eatre activit\u00e9 biologique. De la vie, quoi ! Sur Terre, 90% du m\u00e9thane pr\u00e9sent dans l\u2019air est produit par des organismes vivants.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qhriETwPf10?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=fr-FR&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00abLe m\u00e9thane est un gaz dont la dur\u00e9e de vie est br\u00e8ve \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle g\u00e9ologique, et sa pr\u00e9sence n\u00e9cessite une source active qui pourrait \u00eatre biologique\u00bb, rappelle le Centre national d\u2019\u00e9tudes spatiales (Cnes). La pr\u00e9sence de m\u00e9thane n\u2019est plus une supposition hasardeuse ou un espoir fou d\u2019exobiologistes : \u00abLes pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes missions martiennes ont d\u00e9tect\u00e9 que du m\u00e9thane \u00e9tait pr\u00e9sent dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re avec des concentrations variant dans le temps et selon le lieu.\u00bb C\u2019\u00e9tait par exemple l\u2019une des conclusions de la mission europ\u00e9enne Mars Express, dont le satellite est toujours en orbite martienne \u00e0 l\u2019heure actuelle mais qui n\u2019est pas assez sensible pour approfondir l\u2019enqu\u00eate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Si ce ne sont pas des microbes qui produisent le m\u00e9thane, il faudra conclure que c\u2019est l\u2019activit\u00e9 g\u00e9ologique de la plan\u00e8te. Mars poss\u00e8de de bien beaux volcans, dont le plus massif, Olympus Mons, culmine tout de m\u00eame \u00e0 27 000 kilom\u00e8tres d\u2019altitude. Pour ce que l\u2019on sait, il est \u00e9teint. L&rsquo;espoir est de trouver des traces de mol\u00e9cules organiques qui auraient pu se trouver sur Mars \u00ab\u00a0il y a environ quatre milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es lorsque sa surface ressemblait plus ou moins \u00e0 celle de la Terre, au moment o\u00f9 la vie est apparue sur notre plan\u00e8te\u00a0\u00bb, explique Jorge Vago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Schiaparelli, qui porte le nom d&rsquo;un astronome italien du XIXe si\u00e8cle, p\u00e8se 600 kilos et a la taille d&rsquo;une petite voiture. D\u00e9pourvu de panneaux solaires, il ne vivra que deux \u00e0 quatre jours. Equip\u00e9e d&rsquo;instruments europ\u00e9ens et russes, \u00ab\u00a0TGO sera comme un grand nez dans l&rsquo;espace\u00a0\u00bb, selon Jorge Vago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Elle doit rechercher des gaz \u00e0 l&rsquo;\u00e9tat de trace dans l&rsquo;atmosph\u00e8re de la plan\u00e8te, notamment ceux \u00e0 base de carbone comme le m\u00e9thane. Ce gaz int\u00e9resse les scientifiques car sur Terre, il est \u00e0 90% d&rsquo;origine biologique. En outre, sa dur\u00e9e de vie est limit\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sa d\u00e9tection par TGO pourrait donc constituer un indice possible de la pr\u00e9sence actuelle d&rsquo;une vie micro-organique sur Mars.
