Cette \u00e9tude men\u00e9e par une \u00e9quipe internationale dont quatre chercheurs de l\u2019Institut de physique du globe de Paris (CNRS, Paris Diderot, Sorbonne Paris Cit\u00e9) est publi\u00e9e dans la revue Science du 31 octobre 2014.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Au cours de son histoire, m\u00eame r\u00e9cente, la Terre a connu des \u00e9ruptions exceptionnelles par le volume de mat\u00e9riel volcanique \u00e9mis. Ce fut notamment le cas, il y a 74 000 ans en Indon\u00e9sie, \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 de la zone de subduction de Sumatra. Une \u00e9ruption explosive gigantesque a form\u00e9 une immense caldeira, devenue l\u2019actuel lac Toba long de \ud83d\ude2f km. Les sp\u00e9cialistes estiment \u00e0 2 800 km3 le volume de mat\u00e9riel volcanique \u00e9mis dans l\u2019atmosph\u00e8re, ce qui a tr\u00e8s vraisemblablement eu un impact sur le climat et la biosph\u00e8re \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle globale. Etait-ce un \u00e9v\u00e9nement unique survenu il y a des milliers d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es ou pourrait-il se produire \u00e0 nouveau ? Pour s\u2019en faire une id\u00e9e, il faudrait conna\u00eetre l\u2019ensemble du processus qui a conduit \u00e0 la formation du super-volcan \u00e0 l\u2019origine d\u2019une telle explosion et en particulier sa structure profonde.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Une \u00e9ruption cataclysmique de ce type suppose, en effet, la formation d\u2019un super-volcan et l\u2019accumulation d\u2019une quantit\u00e9 importante de magma dans la cro\u00fbte. Comment une telle quantit\u00e9 de magma peut-elle s\u2019accumuler dans la cro\u00fbte terrestre ? Quelle est la structure du syst\u00e8me magmatique en profondeur. Est-elle compos\u00e9e d\u2019une seule grande chambre magmatique compacte, ou bien le magma est-il r\u00e9parti en plus petits volumes ? Et quelle serait la forme des ces petits amas de magma ? Pour tenter de r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 ces questions une \u00e9quipe compos\u00e9e de chercheurs russe, fran\u00e7ais et allemand (1) a entrepris d\u2019\u00e9tudier la structure profonde de la caldeira de Toba.<\/p><div class=\"1665f18d14f35dd9e7566e1a8ac9a3e9\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-2860849627502538\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"3019501113\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cette \u00e9quipe a utilis\u00e9 une technique r\u00e9cente d&rsquo;imagerie sismique passive mise au point par des \u00e9quipes fran\u00e7aises en 2005. La m\u00e9thode consiste \u00e0 installer un r\u00e9seau dense de stations sismologiques, ici 40 sismom\u00e8tres r\u00e9partis dans la r\u00e9gion de Toba par des chercheurs du GFZ-Potsdam, et d\u2019analyser le bruit sismique ambiant (provoqu\u00e9 par la houle, le vent, les mar\u00e9es, l\u2019activit\u00e9 humaine), plut\u00f4t que de s\u2019int\u00e9resser aux ondes issues des s\u00e9ismes. En effet, contrairement aux s\u00e9ismes, le bruit sismique pr\u00e9sente l\u2019avantage d\u2019\u00eatre permanent. Ils ont observ\u00e9 que la vitesse de ces ondes d\u00e9pendait de la direction dans laquelle elles cisaillent le milieu sur leur passage, ce qui est caract\u00e9ristique d\u2019une forte anisotropie du milieu. Plus pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment l&rsquo;anisotropie sismique observ\u00e9e est due \u00e0 l&rsquo;orientation pr\u00e9dominante d\u2019intrusions magmatiques horizontales, que les volcanologues appellent \u00ab sills \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ainsi, les observations ont montr\u00e9 que la cro\u00fbte terrestre sous ce super-volcan est constitu\u00e9e de nombreuses intrusions magmatiques quasi horizontales (sills), dont certaines sont encore partiellement fondues.
